Description: It has been said that effective use of values is one of the most important tools for improving painting. Many artists can see and reproduce values to their satisfaction. But there is more to using this tool. Are we using value as an effective tool in designing and completing a painting, whether realistic or abstracted, or nonobjective? This class will focus on seeing, reproducing and using value as more than just a way to make objects look three dimensional in our two-dimensional painting media. Instructor will use lecture, demonstration and exercises to explore using value in painting. In advance of class, students should prepare and bring to class value scales using 3 separate colors in their chosen paint materials (lightest, darkest and a medium).
